Mac’s Veteran applicant shared some inspiring words on the impacts of his mentorship: "Mac gave me the confidence I needed to apply to schools that I otherwise never would have. After being in the military for so long I wasn't sure if I was a college student material but all it takes is someone who says "yes you can do that" to get the ball rolling. I would definitely recommend peer-to-peer mentorship." - Kaine Alvarez, Bowdoin College 2028

Winston Harris IIUncategorizedService to SchoolFri, 19 Jan 2024 20:06:44 +0000/our-ambassadors/winston-harris-ii640f80d70162977811a6eefa:6412248243e1047ef73e89d9:65aad4effc4cbf794bb39434

Winston has served in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman for over 13 years. In 2016 he transitioned to the US Navy Reserves and deployed in 2019 to the Horn of Africa, where he earned his Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist designation. He currently serves in the US Navy Reserves and is attached to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment out of Madison, WI as a Senior Line Corpsman. At the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point (UWSP) he majored in Healthcare Administration with a minor in Business Administration. Winston earned his Master of Health Science in Physician Assistant (PA) studies from the South College - Nashville PA program. Winston is interested in diversity in medicine, patient-centered care, servant leadership, and patient advocacy. When he’s not studying or spending time with his two boys, he’s listening to podcasts on 2x speed, working out, or trail running.

Hometown? Temecula, CA

When did you graduate and what are you doing now current post-graduation? South College - Nashville (2023), University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point (2020), and Vincennes University (2015)

Fun Fact About Yourself? All my younger siblings have joined the Navy after me as an ENM1, IT2, and HT3.

What did you do in the military? Hospital Corpsman/ Behavioral Health Technician/ Field Medical Service Technician

Why did you decide to volunteer with Service to School? I didn't have much support navigating the journey to becoming a PA. I hope to make it easier for others who are on a similar journey.

How has your experience as an Ambassador been? I've enjoyed being able to connect with service members who had different military experiences than mine but ended up with the same goal.

Winston’s advice to veterans considering pursuing higher education?

Write down the goals you have for when you complete your education. Take time to ensure your actions continue to align with those goals. If realize they aren't, it's okay to make course corrections toward your desired purpose.

Winston’s Veteran applicant shared some inspiring words on the impacts of his mentorship: "Service to School provided me with an excellent mentor who guided me through the rigorous application process. We conducted mock interviews together, and he played a crucial role in enhancing my personal statement to effectively highlight my military service. Being mentored by another veteran was one of the most valuable experiences I gained from S2S. My mentor not only understood my path to medicine but also shared my commitment in aiding underserved communities. Drawing on our shared experiences, his expertise significantly enriched my application and provided guidance on which aspects to emphasize during the interview process." - Karyna Bravo, Stanford School Of Medicine 2026

Matthew’s Veteran applicant shared some inspiring words on the impacts of his mentorship: “It was essential to my success. He helped me choose top schools that I normally would not have applied to due to self-selection. He supported me through the whole journey in every aspect of my applications. He was, and still is, a great source of encouragement and support. Without a doubt, the most professional and knowledgeable individual I have worked with during my transition from soldier to civilian. Matt's help and services are priceless.” – Matthew Rogowski, Stanford Law School, Fall 2023

She was straightforward and available through the whole process despite the fact that I was calling throughout the holidays and I'm really grateful for her assistance. I really can't express enough how much Daisy's availability helped me. She was so willing to assist and I hated to interrupt her holiday season, but there was no sign of frustration and she was so patient with me the whole time. It was really a great experience.” – Stefanie Thompson, Duke University: Fuqua, Fall 2023

John’s Veteran applicant shared some inspiring words on the impacts of his mentorship: “It has meant absolutely everything. What I needed most was an extra set of eyes to help me edit admission essays for 6 different universities. I was having trouble trying to translate all of my military experience in a way that schools and civilians could easily understand. Even though John was also a full time graduate student, he still made the time to edit and give me feedback on which direction to go in. He did this numerous times over the course of a few months. Moses ChoUncategorizedService to SchoolTue, 23 May 2023 16:17:37 +0000/our-ambassadors/moses-cho640f80d70162977811a6eefa:6412248243e1047ef73e89d9:646ce4c590a8d75dc322bd01

Moses Cho served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2010-2014 as an Amphibious Assault Vehicle Technician. Upon completion of his military service, he returned home to San Jose, California, and attended De Anza Community College. With the help of Service to School, Moses matriculated to Yale in fall of 2016. He was the President of the Eli Whitney Student Society and is adamantly working with various student groups to promote veteran integration on campus. He is majoring in Political Science with a research emphasis on International Political Economics. Moses interned at J.P. Morgan in the Global Wealth Management department during the summer of 2017, and transitioned to Tech Finance in 2019 working for Amazon as a Business Financial Analyst on the Alexa Devices team.

Moses’ Veteran applicant shared some inspiring words on the impacts of his mentorship: “Moses was an integral part of my college admission journey. My wife and I were both transitioning out of the military and decided to call upon the help of S2S to assist our college application process. S2S understood that our situation was nuanced, as my wife and I requested to have the same ambassador on our journey. Moses stepped up to the occasion and took on the tasks of mentoring my wife and me.

Moses took hours out of his busy schedule to guide us through the ins-and-outs of the college application process. He took the time to answer our questions, and even went as far as finding points of contacts that would answer any questions that he did not know. He also provided input on our college essays, providing grammatical and literary critiques when applicable.

For all of these benefits, we are extremely grateful. Though, most importantly, Moses gave us the motivation and encouragement needed to strive in the application process. He reminded us that we were capable of getting accepted into universities that we never thought capable of attending. Because of his efforts, I was accepted into Columbia University School of General Studies, and my wife was accepted into Columbia University and Princeton University.

Moses, along with the S2S staff, changed our lives forever. We are extraordinarily grateful at the volunteers who made this possible.” – Austin Lambert, Columbia University - School of General Studies, Fall 2023

Jensen CheongUncategorizedService to SchoolTue, 23 May 2023 16:16:52 +0000/our-ambassadors/jensen-cheong640f80d70162977811a6eefa:6412248243e1047ef73e89d9:646ce612d0ec5506b23bffec

Jensen is a former active-duty Air Force Captain with over seven years of experience as an Air Battle Manager. He has deployed three times in support of national objectives in the Middle East and in response to the Ukrainian Crisis in Eastern Europe. Jensen is also an avid language enthusiast, and he has represented the Air Force globally in an official capacity due to his unique language abilities. He was commissioned into the Air Force from ROTC at Cornell University. He subsequently completed his graduate education in global affairs at the University of Oklahoma. He is a proud volunteer for Veterans seeking assistance in the college admissions process.

Jensen’s Veteran applicant shared some inspiring words on the impacts of his mentorship: “Jensen's help was truly invaluable in my success. It is hard to articulate the amount of gratitude I have for the countless hours he contributed to revising my essays, revising my resume, conducting interview prep, and much more. He also provided critical information on the logistics of the admissions process. He walked me through certain paperwork I would have to turn in, when I could expect to hear from colleges, the differences between a safety school and dream school, etc. I can genuinely say that without his help I would not have achieved my success in this process. He often says that it is my success is mine alone as I was the one that put in the work. Without his feedback and contributions, however, there would have been no way for me to successfully articulate the work I had done into well-rounded, full-context essays. In total, I wrote just shy of 20 essays. Jensen went through at least 3 revisions on each of my essays with me. He also spent at least 5 hours on my interview preparations before my Yale interview (which I am confident was the strongest part of my application). When I signed up for S2S I was not sure what to expect in terms of help, but I can confidently say I did not imagine that level of assistance. Even typing this out and thinking about the sheer amount of time Jensen contributed towards my success I find myself absolutely humbled. I am endlessly grateful for this organization and for Jensen.” – Johnathon Tesmer, Yale University, Fall 2023

Shiv’s Veteran applicant shared some inspiring words on the impacts of his mentorship: “Without Shiv, the transition out of active duty service and into a top MBA program would have seemed hopelessly confusing, daunting, and opaque. Shiv's constant advice, as well as encouragement, was the foundation of the support system I needed to be successful throughout the process. His insights were timely and accurate, and the empathy he had for my background and experiences helped put my best foot forward in my applications. Mike WagnerUncategorizedService to SchoolWed, 22 Mar 2023 19:19:00 +0000/our-ambassadors/mike-wagner640f80d70162977811a6eefa:6412248243e1047ef73e89d9:641b08c92e41e4008e945173

Mike graduated from the University of Hawaii in 2008. After completing a year of civilian flight training, Mike was accepted into the Army’s warrant officer flight program. He completed Warrant Officer Candidate School in 2010 and graduated from flight school in 2012 as an AH-64D Apache Helicopter Pilot. Mike earned pilot-in-command responsibility in Korea, his first duty station, and he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel while at his second duty station of Fort Carson, Colorado. He separated from active duty in May 2018, and he graduated from the Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management in 2020.

Mike’s Veteran applicant shared some inspiring words on the impacts of his mentorship: “The MBA application experience is a daunting and, at times, seemingly impossible challenge. It is no small feat, from the standardized tests, non-stop networking, countless essays, short answers, interviews, and even potentially working your way off a waitlist or two. Mike was there with me every step of the way. As a mentor in the application process, a coach delivering feedback through my 6th essay rewrite, and a friend offering words of encouragement as I prepped to take the GRE for the 4th and final time. When I first started the application process before connecting with Mike through S2S, at times, it felt like I was alone and stuck on an island; then, I started working with Mike, and he handed me the tools to make my raft to get off that island. I could not have done it without Mike, and thanks to his mentorship, I'm headed to the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon.” – William Mistretta, Carnegie Mellon: Tepper, Fall 2022

David is currently a student at Stanford Law School, where he is pursuing his J.D. as a member of the Class of 2023.

David’s Veteran applicant shared some inspiring words on the impacts of his mentorship: “Dave was there from the beginning. Through countless edits and revisions, he helped me relay my military experience in a way that made me competitive in the admissions process. He went above and beyond what could be expected from a close friend, using his network to make sure that the application made sense to a civilian audience. I owe an incalculable debt of gratitude to Dave. The time and effort he put in positively changed my life. Dave always made time to help me out when I needed it and is guiding me through the transition to law school to this day.” – Samuel Olsson, Stanford School of Law, Fall 2022
